Rivalry between neighbours Guyana and Suriname will be renewed today when the two teams meet in a FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying CFU Group ‘A’ fixture, at the GCC ground.
The locals have looked in excellent form during practice sessions, but as we all know they will have to reproduce that performance on the field.
They will be going into the game with the psychological advantage, having beaten the Surinamese twice in previous friendly encounters last December.
However, even Head Coach of the Guyana squad Mark Rodrigues was quick to admit that those games were friendlies, but the game today is all about the big prize, a World Cup qualifier and he expects the opposition to make the adjustments.
Rodrigues speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly after the final practice session yesterday at the GDF ground stated that they were fortunate to see the first game between the Dutch and St. Vincent & the Grenadines and he is confident that the Guyanese will maintain their dominance over their Surinamese counterparts.
“We saw their performance against St. Vincent and we know what they have to offer and even though I feel that they may make certain adjustments for our clash I still believe that we are tactically and technically more proficient than them.
He, however, cautioned that the girls will have to go out there and execute perfectly to preserve their superior record against the Surinamese.
The Dutch on the other hand will be brimming with confidence having earned full points against St. Vincent, who many felt should have won the game.
Suriname teams as they’ve proven over the years are tough to defeat and no team knows it better that Guyana even though we’ve beaten them in the female version recently.
They also play very physical and that many have resulted in taking the seemingly technically adept Vincentians out of their game plan in the second half.
Rodrigues questioned on whether that would create some bother to the Guyanese said that if they play to their potential it would be difficult for that ploy to affect them since they are more skilful and pass the ball well.
“If the girls play to their true potential the Surinamese physical game should not pose any problems for us, we pass the ball very well and should be quicker than our opponents,” Rodrigues felt.
The Guyanese seems very strong in mid-field and upfront, while the defence have been strengthened by the arrival of Daria Owen.
First choice goalkeeper Ronette Cort has increased in confidence during practice and she should prove very effective between the uprights. Suriname’s Natalie Benjamin looked supremely competent in goal and it would take some fierce shooting from the Guyanese forwards to penetrate her.
They did not display the potency upfront to score many goals, but as the result showed, it took one mistake from the Vincentians for them to win the match. So Guyana will be wary of not committing the same sin.
It should be a good game, but Guyana seems to hold the edge.
Kick-off time is 15:30 hrs and all Guyana is urged to come out and support the Lady Jaguars quest to move further into the competition.
Admission is $500 and children Under-12 is free.
