The GLTA has just concluded one of its fund-raising events to raise money to send a national team of five young players, three boys and two girls accompanied by two coaches to the World Junior Tennis Championships preliminaries which is to be held in Trinidad from March 29 – April 3 2010 at the Eddie Taylor Tennis Courts, King George V Grounds St. Clair. The competition which is being held for the first time in the Caribbean will feature the top players in the region who aspire to participate in the finals which will be held in the Czech Republic from August 2 to 7. The team which was drawn from Georgetown and New Amsterdam was pre-selected based on their performance during a special nine-week training programme which started on January 26 and concludes on March 26, during which the GLTA was able to acquire 4 extra hours of court practice time. The programme also featured weekly mentorship presentations from prominent tennis enthusiasts such as local tennis veteran and Wimbledon finalist Dr. Ian McDonald, ITF Regional Development Officer, Anthony Jeremiah, Christopher Ram, Dr. Steve Surujbally and Secretary, Guyana Table Tennis Association, Godfrey Munroe.
