Beaten but not disgraced is apt in the case of St. Vincent & the Grenadines’ (SVG) loss to Suriname 0-1 in game one of the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying Caribbean Football Union group A opening stage at the GCC ground Bourda yesterday afternoon.
The Vincy ladies almost created a major upset as they matched their more established rivals play for play up until the 65th minute when the attacking Mervil Blatz was brought down in the box and the resulting penalty was clinically scored by their Captain Aisa Smit.
Suriname started on the offensive with most of the play in first 20 minutes concentrated in the St. Vincent half. But while the Surinamese were the dominant team, St. Vincent, who defended well enjoyed a few promising runs at the Surinamese. The Vincy side was guilty of not being patient when they had ball possession, giving it up all too easy, seemingly anxious to get forward. Asha Richards enjoyed two enterprising runs on the left flank but found out that the Surinamese were also very potent in defence.
Given the fact that female football is not well established on the Island of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, the Vincy ladies surprised the Surinamese with a very good level of competence as they grew in confidence as the game matured.
In about the 35th minute SVG’s Trimmingham Riq went on a solo run down the middle of the Surinamese half but her well executed shot on the run just inside the arc went straight to goalkeeper Nathalie Benjamin. Neither team were able to break the deadlock in the first half.
Both teams added fresh legs two minutes into the second half, Suriname introducing Andaya Landveld for Syrona Bruining while SVG’s Shelly Browne was replaced by Coreen Yorke.
Suriname started the half with more purpose as did SVG but the exchanges were tilting in favour of the Dutch ladies. Their nagging runs into the area finally brought them success. In the 65th minute Mervil Blatz moved down the right side midfield and weaved her way into the box but as she approached goal was brought down.
Entrusted with the responsibility of taking the kick was Captain Aisa Smit who placed the ball into the right side corner of Sheree Ann John’s goal. As it turned out, that was the difference between the two sides.
Suriname’s Head Coach Eduard Redjosentono speaking with the media after the game said it was a very good and important victory for them. He disclosed that a number of their players are nursing niggling injuries but was happy with the result and their overall performance.
Two of their players he said they held back for the all important clash with Guyana tomorrow. The Guyanese he noted is a bigger threat to them than SVG but they are confident they will come out victors.
The Lady Jags on the other hand are anxiously awaiting their turn to get into competitive mode and will certainly look to dazzle come tomorrow afternoon from 15:30hrs at the same venue.
