Guyana’s top distance-athletes will attempt justify their national selection this weekend in Trinidad and Tobago when they compete at the North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has selected a strong seven-man team to represent the country at the regional event. Heading the list is local Cross Country champ, Cleveland Forde, who will lead the contingent.
The other locally-based athletes include, Guyana Defence Force’s Wilbert Mingo, Jamaal Chisholm, Ashanti Scott and Rebeka Alexander while Trinidad and Tobago-based Lionel D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson will join them.
The local athletes along with manager, Amanda Hermanstine are scheduled to depart the country tomorrow for the Twin Island Republic. The AAG did not consider its prospects at the junior level in an effort to maximise its chances.
Speaking briefly with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, AAG President, Colin Boyce said that it would have been a bit illogical to select junior athletes when the association had to factor in cost for Forde with the Defence Force paying for the others.
In addition to the seven senior athletes, the association also looked at the possibility of having an eight athlete, Colin Mercurius, also based in Trinidad, on the team but that did not work out because it was too late to register him.
“We had no information on him before. By the time we got the information, it was too late to register him,” Boyce said, adding that the AAG learnt late that Mercurius got 10th in the Trinidad International Marathon in January.
Guyana had three athletes in the top ten at the Marathon. D’Andrade and Johnson were the other two with sixth and eight respectively.
The duo, along with the other athletes, is consistent in their respective disciplines.
