– to finalise team’s return to Leagues
By Edison Jefford
Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club and the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) are apparently sitting at the round table negotiating the team’s return to the Georgetown sub-association ongoing Division I and III Leagues.
Kaieteur Sports understands that the GABA has asked the club to furnish them with one of its correspondences formally seeking a return to the competition they withdrew from at the inception last month for two disparate reasons.
“We had a verbal agreement with them (Sonics) but we have since ask them to put it in writing so that we can have it on record,” GABA President, Trevor Rose informed when contacted for comment on the issue yesterday.
Rose said that a final meeting on the matter was scheduled for last night where the GABA will officially make their decision. “I will have full details after that meeting,” he told this newspaper, adding that there is consensus.
The Georgetown sub-association had fined the club for withdrawing ad hoc from the tournament, citing that it cost the association rental fees for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on the night the club withdrew without notice.
The GABA and Pepsi Sonics subsequently met and an agreement on the fees was reached after a request was made to have it reduced. With that aside, the club proceeded to have it returned to the competition in the interest of its players.
Sonics Head Coach, Mark Agard had told this newspaper that he wants the club to return to competition after making their point with sitting out their first two games. He said that on behalf of the players, who wanted to compete.
Pepsi Sonics had boycotted its opening game of the League and two others on the basis of the GABA failure to respond to a documented infraction with FIBA accredited referee, Aubrey Younge. The club also noted the improper manner of their League invitation as a further source of their decision to not compete in the event.
However, Agard had expressed his concern about the decision stating that he does not think that was made in favour of his players. “I am not going to worry about that at all. It was not a good decision. I want to play basketball,” he had said.
