– cop still in custody
The four men found in a car with a .38 revolver and one live round were on Tuesday remanded to prison by magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when they appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court to answer to the charge of being in possession of arms and ammunition.
The men, Shemroy Corlette, 21, a cane cutter; Cleroy Williams, also a cane cutter; Yougendra Bheemsingh,19; all of Lancaster Village, Corentyne, and Michael Butcher, 24, a taxi driver of Manchester, Corentyne were remanded until March 15.
The men were in a white Toyota Carina AT 192 motorcar with number plate HB 5559 around 15:00 hrs on Thursday in the vicinity of Vryheid Street, New Amsterdam when they were spotted by a mobile police patrol acting in a suspicious manner.
The car was stopped and the men were ordered out as the police proceeded to search the vehicle. The search unearthed one .38 revolver with one live round in the weapon, which was stored in the car pocket behind the driver.
The men after being interrogated told investigators that the weapon belongs to a policeman who is stationed in Georgetown.
The policeman was arrested and questioned but denied knowledge of the weapon. However he is still in custody.
