A distraught Doreen Ivan, 74, of 311 West Ruimveldt is seeking assistance after she claims of being taken advantage of and abused many times by her tenant and has exhausted all her funds on her medical bills while seeking to receive her rent.
She said that she has become a pauper and a beggar. She said that she cannot afford to provide herself with a meal because she has spent all her money on medications for her many ailments.
Doreen explained that her tenant, Randy Aaron, owes her rent since June last year and is unwilling to pay her. She said that she complained to the tenant’s grandmother and was paid some money last year.
The woman said that she was verbally abused on many occasions by her tenant and has even had to sell steel rods and cement left in her yard after some construction was done to her building years ago, for next to nothing in order to purchase something to eat, however she claims now to be unable to catch a bus and is suffering because her rent was her only source of income.
“He calls my phone and cuss me and when I ask for my rent he tell me that he is 30 and could @#$% me if I want that.”
She said she was walking on the road and fell down one day when her blood sugar level was very high and someone picked her up. She related that she was hungry, and the man then advised her to visit a welfare office.
She said that she has been threatened with violence on many occasions and had made reports to the Ruimveldt Police Station. Instead of intervening, the police sergeant wrote a note and asked her to take it to her tenant’s employer.
She said that she went to lifeline counseling and gave the note to her tenant’s employer and her tenant promised to pay her $30,000 rent starting from last month; he also told her that the money would be deposited into her bank account.
In tears she said that when she went to the bank to check the account there was no money.
The woman said that Aaron has since moved out, and changed the locks to the doors. She said that he gave the key to his brother who visits the building and invite others inside to do as they please.
The woman said that many times she would smell drugs being smoked in her building and cannot do anything about it since the persons only come in the nights for short periods.
She disclosed that her former tenant assaulted and shoved a young woman down a flight of stairs after she visited the house to enquire why he was taking advantage of the landlord by not paying the rent. The man was eventually charged and placed before the court where he gave a different address to the magistrate. “Why is it that he gave his address as Leopold Street and he is occupying my house.”
The tearful woman said that she does not know where to go or who to turn to since she has a declining health because of the stress and lack of money to care for herself and to purchase her medications to live a normal life without the stress of her tenant.
