The Guyanese dominated Guyana, Grenada Friendship Association on Saturday night hosted the Guyana and Windward Islands cricket teams to an informal function at the residence of Guyanese Keith Johnson in Grenada.
The Association which held a similar event when Guyana played in Grenada last year has approximately 500 members and was formed to foster a better relationship between the many Guyanese living on the Islands and the locals and regularly organizes cultural and social events.
Both teams, on the Island to face each other in the final round of the Regional 4-Day cricket competition which ends today, were treated to steel pan music and refreshments from 19:00hrs before they departed for their hotel just after 21:00hrs and Guyana Manager Carl Moore and his Windwards counterpart Lockhart Sebastian thanked the organizers for the invitation.
Moore said it is always nice to see Guyanese faces when on overseas tours and promised the Guyana supporters a victory to end what he described as a tough 2010 first class season for the South Americans who hope to beat the Windwards today to finish with 2 back-to-back wins in the 7-team competition.
Guyana Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan who scored his 31st First Class century on Saturday, also expressed gratitude to the Guyana supporters for their encouragement and said the team is a young one with plenty of talent but which needed to understand that the mental aspects of cricket at this level is what separates success from failure.
“If we can play as a team and be happy for the success of each other both on and off the field, that positive vibe can bring plenty of rewards on the field for our country. There is no shortage of talent in Guyana but the players must understand that the team…our country… comes first and work hard on all aspects of their game if they want to improve,” Sarwan said. The team leaves Grenada tomorrow for Guyana.
