Ewart Adams returned from a lengthy hiatus to defeat a high level team of scrabble players including National Champion, Abigail McDonald and cart off the Youman Nabi Open tournament at the Chamber of Commerce building, Waterloo Street, Georgetown.
Adams notched up 5 points and a positive spread of 561 to relegate James Krakowsky, with 4 1/2 points and a positive spread of 276, to second place. McDonald completed the podium places after amassing 4 games with a positive spread of 286. Grace Hercules also chalked up 4 games but finished with a negative spread of 246.
Adams defeated Moen Gafoor by a spread of 3 in the opening game before disposing of Hercules by a mammoth spread of 207 in the second round. He closed off a successful morning with a 77 spread victory over McDonald.
Krakowsky spoiled Adams’ day with a close win by a spread of 12. Adams brushed aside the loss and rebounded with two victories over Julian Skeete (53) and Anand Mohabir (153). Krakowsky’s other victims were Mohabir (108), Michael Benjamin (170). He also earned a bye. He dropped games to Moen Gafoor (341) and McDonald (62).
Hercules followed up on her recent victory over McDonald in the recently staged GASP Open to register another upset.
The players convene again today for the Phagwah Open tournament at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas Lands.
