Dear Editor,
There are some questions I would like to ask concerning the use of our roads, and I do hope that there can be answers forthcoming from the relevant authorities.
1) What should a pedestrian do while standing at a zebra crossing so that he/she can use the crossing and be safe?
My reason for asking this question is because I have witnessed on many occasions pedestrian waiting to use the crossing, indicating that they would like to use the crossing and are unable to because vehicles refuse to stop. A crossing of note is the one by the Providence Stadium.
I stood there one day for about eight minutes indicating that I needed to cross and nobody stopped to facilitate my crossing. Were they within their rights or were my rights violated?
2) When a vehicle stops in an illegal zone or is parked in an illegal way that’s impeding the free flow of traffic, I would like to know if putting on the hazard lights on that vehicle can legalize the illegal deed’?
Note: there is no emergency the driver is sitting in his car clubbing.
3) A cyclist is riding along Regent Street he is almost at the corner of Regent and Albert going east, a vehicle is approaching the said corner with intent of turning into Albert Street; the cyclist cannot know that because he neither has a rear view mirror nor eyes in the back of his head.
Well then is it logical, does it speak of care, caution, courtesy, consideration or common sense for that motorist to just toot his horn a couple of times then proceed to turn in front of that cyclist on some occasion forcing him to turn involuntarily into the street to avoid being hurt?
4) Is it right for a motorist to drive through the light when the green man is on, which I presume gives premised to pedestrians?
I have seen this happening repeatedly at Had field and High Street and Republic Avenue and Church Street some times in police presence. I can state a lot more of what I recorded, but I will leave that for another time.
Sometimes I ask myself, “Are there Laws in Guyana?” Then I remember that we always reap what we sow. And lawlessness was sown by one of our Head of State a while back.
The laws of Guyana were thrown over the shoulder of that Head of State and that Head of State was complimented by one in high office.
Maybe we are reaping the rewards. I wonder when it will end.
May God help us Guyanese.
