Republican welterweight boxer, Dhanishwar Narine would have lost his flyweight encounter against Edwin Richards but the youngster turned in a resilient performance that augurs well for the future.
Displaying the type of courage reminiscent of those pugilists that preceded him in the late seventies and early eighties, Narine punched his heart out but was unfortunate to have opposed a fighter of Richards’ caliber. Richards eventually prevailed when he forced the referee to stop the bout in 2:55 seconds of the third round.
The administrators of the Prison Service may do well to nurture this talent as a part of Narine’s rehabilitation. Indeed, the administrators of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association had promised to select the best available talent to compete on the Pro/Am boxing card organized by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports, and they were true to their word.
The four bouts were all action packed starting from the very first bout when Harpy Eagle’s, Ansila Charles defeated Rene David (PRBG) in their flyweight encounter, to the last amateur bout when Republican, Damian Ross lost out to Bert Braithwaite (GDF) in the welterweight department. In between those fights, Dexter Jordon (FYF) romped home to a comfortable unanimous points victory over Imran Khan (HE).
Despite Narine’s sterling performance, no one can dispute the determination displayed by Richards. Representing the Guyana Defence Force, Richards, who has recently risen to the fore in the monthly inter-gym boxing tournament organized by several amateur boxing enthusiasts, turned in another masterful performance that forced the referee to call a halt to his fight against the Republican.
Earlier, in the first round, Richards had employed an attacking style to get the better of Narine even as the latter fighter fought back gamely. In the end, Richards’ courage won out.
Dexter Jordon is another boxer to keep an eye on. He employed every mode of attack and simply outclassed Khan to take a comfortable unanimous points decision. Republican Damian Ross, despite losing to Braithwaite, another Republican, must be commended on his pluck. His coach Carl Graham disclosed that none of his fighters were able to prepare fully for the bout.
This all had to do with the restrictive situation within the confines of prison.
Nevertheless, both Republicans performed remarkably well leaving one to wonder at what might have been were they fully fit. Ross lost out to Braithwaite but in the early stages, matched his every move; his every punch. The grueling battle eventually took its toll on the Republican and he eventually lost the bout. What was indeed commendable was the grit demonstrated by this Republican boxer.
He would have triggered nostalgic memories of the late Winston Richards, who exploits as a Republican is well documented. Other notable Republican fighters of that era included Allan ‘Red Belly’ Housner and Mark ‘Scupuchi’ Yaw.
GABA will be perusing the available talent in an effort to engage the best in combat for the second edition of the ProAm boxing card in March month end.
