Stun Conquerors with come from behind 3-2 win
By Franklin Wilson
Pele FC fought back gallantly to stun favorites Fruta Conquerors 3-2 to cart off the 2009 DeSinco Trading sponsored Under-19 competition organised by the Georgetown Football Association.
Playing in sweltering heat at the GFC ground yesterday, the lads in yellow and blue, showed immense grit, determination and patience in overcoming the challenges offered by a compact and solid Fruta Conquerors side to lift the championship.
In the third place playoff, Santos needled Sunburst Camptown compliments of a 49th minute William Europe effort in a close tussle.
But it was the championship game that produced a great deal of excitement as the spectators cheered all the way. Conquerors stamped the early initiative when they raced into the lead a mere 2 minutes into the game, Travis Savory hitting a well taken shot past goalkeeper Seon Jackson at the North Road end goal.
But the Conquerors lads hardly began to celebrate their early success when an excellent square ball deep in the Conquerors attacking third came across and was met by the hungry Rawle Adams who clinically headed past custodian Junior Edwards in the 4th minute.
It was a classical goal that had the tongues of the spectators wagging; even Conquerors fans applauded the effort.
It was back to even exchanges thereafter as the two sides matched each other in attack and defence, Pele enjoying the better of the exchanges in mid field with Omallo Williams in charge. Conquerors were not contented with the score being equal and in the 23rd minute Paul Bobb broke the deadlock for the Fruta Boys.
He stepped up for a free kick just outside the area on the left side and executed same to precision, curling the ball around the 8-man wall and goalkeeper who were all reduced to spectators, watching leather connect with nets.
But as was the case with the first goal, Pele did not allow Conquerors to get too comfortable and Omallo Williams with a 22 yards left foot rocket tied the score again in the 25th minute. The first half ended with the score unchanged.
Second half action saw the advantage swaying both ways as the teams tightened up defensively and chances dried up. Changes were made by both teams as the game progressed. But it was the double change of Jermaine Sutton and Kerwyn Benjamin who were introduced by Coach Gordon Braithwaite that added some life to the Pele offence and midfield.
The two changed things around for the winners with a number of promising runs down the left side.
The winner with 10 minutes to full time was a stunner. Conquerors had just missed another effort at the Regent Street goal and Pele pounced on the opportunity to counterattack as many of the Conquerors players were not alert enough and were lagging back.
The ball was quickly played down the left flank deep into Conquerors’ half and a powerfully squared ball by substitute Kerwyn Benjamin, struck flat and hard saw the outstretched goalie Junior Edwards only succeeding in parrying the ball into the back of the nets at the near post.
Pele were able to keep Conquerors at bay for the remainder of the game to come out champions of a tournament which commenced last year with 12 teams placed in two groups of 4.
The top 2 from each group advanced to the second stage which was played on a knock-out basis.
The presentation of prizes will be held at a later date.
