Dear Editor,
The sugar factory at Skeldon marks the single largest investment by the Government of Guyana. It is a multi-million dollar investment that is yet to show returns for monies spent.
What we have been witnessing so far are a multitude of problems ever since this factory came on stream, or should we say supposedly came on stream, as far as reports go nothing substantial has taken place at Skeldon since, and this has forced the Government to take drastic action in the firing of some of the highly paid officials there.
A poor developing country like ours can ill afford this sort of thing to happen especially when much needed scarce resources are being lost on a daily basis. Far greater accountability must be given for such wanton squander of our nations’ hard earned money.
A closer look at the state of affairs at Skeldon shows that this factory has been built by the People’s Republic of China. Mass production is the only thing that I know the Chinese are naturally good at. Skeldon is definitely a classic case in point and I call on the Government to face up to reality that they have made a bad investment, things have gone horribly wrong and this must be corrected now before more money is wasted. No amount of firing of officials there could solve the problem; these are only band aid measures that would prolong the issue.
The Chinese have to go and now is the time to sever ties with them; this is the only way to stop the hemorrhaging. Some of our sister CARICOM countries have done the honorable thing and gotten rid of China as a trading partner St Lucia, St Kitts and St Vincent readily comes to mind.
In their varied and sundry experiences all of the structures build by the Chinese had to be redone at enormous cost; millions of dollars had to be spent in correcting structural faults to existing edifices built by the Chinese.
I do hope President Jagdeo and the Minister so responsible take note of my letter and urgently do something to halt the slide.
