The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will host its third developmental meet of the new season tomorrow in Linden where those athletes chosen for national duty will persist with their preparations before the CARIFTA Games trials.
The 26 athletes chosen to represent Guyana at the Inter-Guiana Games in French Guiana from March 26-28 will use this meet to improve on their performances and fitness before returning next weekend for the CARIFTA Games trials.
The previous two developmental meets at the Police Sports Club Ground and the Guyana Defence Force Ground proved to be adequately successful with Guyana’s best athletes on show at both venues earlier this month.
A similar atmosphere is expected at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground today as meet III in the series gets underway at the renowned venue. The participation of Guyana’s leading seniors could not be confirmed, but the juniors will compete.
Senior sprint champion Rawle Greene returned to the track in the development meet II at Camp Ayangana. He faced stiff challenge from the Defence Force’s, Rupert Perry, who turned in a blistering 10.5 seconds to win the 100m.
Like Greene, Michael Saul has been inactive on the track this season, giving way to a rise of novices, who are all hungry for the top sprint spot in the country. Those juniors will be on show tomorrow in Linden to continue the rivalry.
For the female seniors, Alisha Fortune continues to dominate with Neisa Allen and Leota Bobb in the not too distant shadow. They are all expected to go head-to-head in the 100m race today with surprises always a strong possibility.
Chavez Ageday, Shawn Semple, Winston Caesar, Kevin Bailey, Tyshon Bentick, Stefan James are some of the notable male junior athletes likely to compete today. They were all selected on the male IGG team for French Guiana.
On the other hand, Shanna Thornhill, twins Shemaine and Shequan Daniels, Iana Graham Tiffany Carto, Deja Smartt among others will lead the challenge in the female events; the quest for bragging rights continues among them.
Graham and Carto have always had a ding dong battle in the sprint events, especially the 100m with Graham losing the last battle at the Enmore Community Centre Ground to the diminutive Carto.
They will go at it again in the Mining Town.
President of the AAG, Colin Boyce told Kaieteur Sport briefly yesterday that the contest in Linden is part of the association’s plan to decentralise the sport. He said that meets are also slated for Berbice and Essequibo later this year.
