CARACAS(NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – Venezuela has ruled out any possible territorial conflict with Guyana and Colombia despite long standing claims with these two Latin nations, which according to President Hugo Chavez, are being dealt with through diplomatic channels.
At a press conference recently, Chavez said that the issue of the Gulf of Venezuela is being discussed with Colombia through a negotiating commission established when both countries had good relations.
He admitted that progress is over in this regard but at the same time stressed that there is “no conflict in sight, “as neither Colombia nor Venezuela is interested in triggering it.”
It is a bilateral issue being dealt with through talks by a committee of experts who meet frequently, he said.
Regarding the century-old claim made to Guyana for a major part of the Essequibo region, he said that the issue is in the hands of the United Nations and there is no conflict with what he described as a sister nation.
“I am sure that nothing will strain our relations because of this. We will be able to deal with these issues properly, as it should be through diplomatic channels,” said Chavez.
