The time for talking is over and it is now time to showcase strength and grit at the 2010 Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation Novices championships.
Kaieteur Sport understands that athletes from the three Counties will be battling for top honours come tomorrow at the Saint Stanislaus College Auditorium. Not much is known of athletes from the Cinderella County of Essequibo but Kaieteur Sport understands that they will give a very good account of themselves tomorrow.
The Ancient County and Demerara have been dominating the sport but can very well be tested by the unknowns come tomorrow.
Apart from strongman Colin ‘Mr. Clean’ Chesney who competes in the 125kg (242lb class) attempting to become the first Guyanese to squat 800 pounds when he appears as a guest lifter tomorrow, it is not known if any other athletes from the Mining Town of Linden will be competing.
All rules and regulations of the GAPF, Regional and World bodies will be in full effect and random drug testing is expected to be done at this event. Additionally, all gear must be IPF/ GAPF approved; no hiking or safety boots will be allowed, only flats – converse boots or sneakers.
The local governing body is tightening up on the rules as athletes will have to begin getting into the Caribbean Championships mode. Guyana will be hosting the 4th Annual International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) / North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) / Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships from March 18-20, 2010 at the Princess Hotel, Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Meanwhile, the Intermediate Championships will take place on May 30th while the seniors will be contested on October 24, 2010.
Athlete’s who are interested in making the National team for championships in Puerto Rico in July, must compete at the Novices and the Intermediate which will give the GAPF the opportunity to evaluate them.
