– fate of Chairman still to be decided – Minister Lall
Minister of Local Government, Kellawan Lall, has sent home Overseer of the Eccles/Ramsburg Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), David Sugrim, for alleged wrongdoings over an attempted sale of land earmarked for a playground at Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara.
Last night, Minister Lall also said that he is still to decide what to do about the Chairman of the NDC, Mr S. Khan, over the incident.
Kaieteur News was told that the piece of land in Nandy Park had been set aside for a playground but moves were made to have it sold. The Overseer and the Chairman reportedly put out tenders secretly and by the deadline last Monday nine bids were submitted.
Some of the Councilors got word of the deal and immediately appealed to President Bharrat Jagdeo who invoked the wrath of his Local Government Minister.
Lall last night disclosed that Overseer, David Sugrim, did not seek written permission and after the matter was brought to his attention, the NDC official was sent home earlier this week pending an investigation.
This newspaper was told that the land was advertised for sale in the newspapers and nine bids were received. The bids were expected to be open last Monday.
It was unclear under what circumstance the NDC took the decision to sell the land but an official last night said that several regulations governing the handling of the transaction seemed to have been in breach.
The news last night of the Overseer being sent home comes at a time when the Regional Executive Officer of Region Four, Shafdar Ali, is on the police wanted bulletin for fraud. Many believe that he has fled the jurisdiction
Yesterday, the police issued a wanted bulletin for Ali.
