For the second year in a row, 27-year-old Melissa ‘Vanilla’ Roberts has copped the Road March title. This represents the third time that the energetic and talented artiste has been adjudged winner of the competition.
The Mash Secretariat, which provided the official results, stated that her song ‘High’ was the most played along the Mashramani Float Parade route on February 23, and as such, she was adjudged the 2010 Road March winner.
Prior to this, she won the title in 2007 when she sang ‘Queen of the band’ then again last year.
This was her fourth year in the competition. She missed the title by one point in 2008 when Big Red won with ‘On the road again.’
‘High’ went up against fifteen other compelling selections, including Jumo’s ‘In de air’ and Soca Monarch Bones-man’s ‘Mashramani time is we own’ and it was played a record-breaking 39 times along the route.
When contacted with the news, ‘Vanilla’ who won the GT &T’s People’s Choice Award for the same song said “Okay, I trust your information, but I don’t really react in any way out of the ordinary when I win.”
She said the song, written by her manager Burchmore Simon, is about the colourful festival of Mash and encourages all to get involved in building the spirit of Mashramani as we look to take the festival to the next level.
Simon also wrote ‘Wrap it up’ and ‘Mama I don’t want to be born’ and these were adjudged as winners of the 2010 Junior calypso competition and the HIV/Aids song competition. Simon also co-wrote the winning Soca monarch song done by Bones-man.
Of her consecutive win, ‘Vanilla’ said she is quite happy and hopes that the trend will continue. She admitted that this time around because of the quality of soca music around, “I wasn’t sure if I was going to win this year, but last year I was certain when I won with Rude.”
‘Vanilla’ also placed second in the soca monarch competition as she had done last year with ‘Rude’ and she revealed that she will certainly be going up for the soca monarch title next year as well as going for a Road March ‘three-peat’.
Her manager said “it was a great season and Vanilla’s win is an additional incentive to continue to work hard and dedicate ourselves to further developing the music industry”.
Roberts, who hails from Berbice but resides in Georgetown, said that two weeks from now her fans can look forward to a scorching video for her single titled “Pressure”. She expressed gratitude to all her supporters and said “I could not have done it without you, the fans.”
