After a neck and neck battle Anthony Stephens was able to gather enough energy to move away from competitor Errol Rose and win the Unity For the nation Mashramani six mile walk race which was held on Mash Day around the town of New Amsterdam. The 16 yrs old Stephens won from 14 other competitors in a time of 1hr 2 minutes.
The veteran Rose came in second ahead of new comer Jason Calister, Brian Roberts and Andrew Coppin as they rounded out the top five.
The race which was organised by Physical Instructor, community activist, Sports Organiser and founder of the Unity for the nation Organisation, Eli Hazel, saw the athletes taking off from No 39 Stanleytown outside of the Sold Out disco, proceed along the main Road to Tacama Turn where they made a left turn into Republic Road, then to Winkle where they proceeded around the New Amsterdam hospital, back onto the main road to Stanleytown where they finished at the starting point.
At the end of the event the top finishers were presented with trophies and other incentives by the organiser, who also assisted some of the participants from Georgetown with their transportation costs.
Hazel speaking to Kaieteur News after the event said that he was encouraged by the participation and attitude of the walkers and plans to organize a similar event in the near future.
Hazel said that event will be bigger and will have more incentives available. He will once again be using his Unity For The nation Initiative. Persons interested can make contact with Hazel on Telephone No 333-3309.
