Police have informed that a 19-year-old man wanted for the murder of a Brazilian policeman will most likely have to serve his time in Guyana if he is convicted of simple larceny, for which he was held at Lethem.
The man, William Da Silva, was arrested by the captain and residents of the Amerindian village of Shulinab and handed over to police at Lethem after he was accused along with two other men of stealing a bicycle.
It was while in police custody at Lethem that local cops received information that he was wanted in Brazil for the cop’s 2007 murder.
However Kaieteur News understands that Da Silva is alleging that one of his brothers committed the act. He reportedly told investigators that he ran away before the cop was killed.
But there are reports that Brazilian authorities have furnished their local counterparts with photographs of the suspect. It is alleged that Da Silva and two accomplices killed a Brazilian policeman by slashing his throat. They then took his weapon and fled.
Da Silva managed to elude capture until Wednesday when the Brazilians tracked him to Lethem.
A senior police official told Kaieteur News that diplomatic channels will have to be explored before the suspect could be handed over to Brazilian authorities.
“We have him for simple larceny,” the official said. He could not say if Da Silva is in Guyana legally or not.
But in an interview with Kaieteur News yesterday, Da Silva’s mother, Doreen Lorentino, alleged that another son committed the crime, but that he acted in self-defence.
Ms. Lorentino claimed that at the time, police were investigating reports that her sons were in possession of an unlicenced shotgun.
However, she claimed that the firearm was a licenced one that had belonged to their father, who had passed away.
At the time, the family was in an Amerindian community, and the suspect’s mother alleged that the victim and other police ranks had entered the community without seeking permission from the village elders.
She alleged that during the investigation, the victim had attempted to shoot one of her three sons and one of the siblings had pounced on the man and slit his throat.
Ms. Lorentino said that the son who committed the act then fled with the slain man’s firearm.
According to Ms. Lorentino, she is unaware of the son’s whereabouts, but said that she would turn him over to the local police if she locates him.
