The Cinderella County lost one of its most cherished residents on Monday last, when 105-year-old Millicent Jackson, fondly referred to as “Aunt Millie” died at her Reliance, Essequibo Coast residence, shortly after complaining of feeling unwell.
A police report stated that on Monday afternoon a neighbor had informed of her suspicions that Aunt Millie had not gotten up since retiring to bed earlier that day.
Police ranks who made the discovery, after conducting an investigation, are speculating that the elderly woman, who resided alone, may have died earlier that day. No marks of violence were found on the body which has since been taken to the Essequibo Funeral Home.
Millicent Jackson was born on November 26, 1904, in Suddie, to Ernest Arthur and Rebecca Simon also known as Rachel. She was the second of six children. Her siblings were Joseph, Ernest, Agnes, Babsie and Albertina Simon. She received her formal education at the Methodist Nursery School at Bush Lot before attending the Payne’s Primary at Anna Regina.
After dropping out of School in the fourth form due to financial constraints, Aunt Millie started working in Georgetown as a domestic. She later returned to the Coast where she continued in the same field and eventually married her sweetheart Leyland Jackson in 1939. He was an operator at the time. Their union produced no children.
Her husband died some years later prompting Aunt Millie to direct her attention to establishing a small bakery at her home which became her main source of income. She baked cakes, bread and a variety of mouth watering pastries which she also sold to neighbouring villages. In fact, she used a bicycle to get around to sell her cakes and pastries, a feat which gained her much popularity.
Though she was visually impaired the woman lived alone until her death. She lost her sight to glaucoma in 1983. However, that did not prevent her from enjoying her life to the fullest.
The ardent Christian regularly attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Reliance. And she was
still agile before her death. She customarily took it upon herself to uplift her old age pension with the assistance of caring neighbors.
Essequibians who over the years took pride in her outstanding life have regarded Aunt Millie’s death as a great loss. Arrangements for her funeral are currently being made.
