-Two held for questioning
A 65-year-old remigrant was yesterday afternoon found murdered in his Peter’s Hall School Street, home East Bank Demerara.
The body was discovered by his only son Rameshwar Mithu shortly after 14:00hrs.
The man, Ishwar Mithu, who has a hearing defect, lived in the United States for over 35 years had only returned to Guyana about a year ago. Robbery appeared to have been the motive since a heavy duty washing machine; microwave, blender and television set were all missing.
The thieves gained entry through the man’s kitchen window. The metal grill was cut and several louvre panes were removed.
His son told Kaieteur News, that a neighbour called him shortly after 14:00hrs yesterday telling him she had not seen his father for the day.
“His neighbour called me telling me that my father’s air condition was on all day and that she had not seen my father”.
The man’s son said that he found it strange and immediately went to his father’s house which is a short distance from his workplace.
Upon arrival at the house he noticed that several louvre windows were missing, the metal grill had been cut and the back door was open.
Mithu said that he entered the house and noticed large muddy footprints. Fighting to hold back tears, the man said that he called out to his father but got no response. When he went upstairs his worse fears were confirmed.
His father was partly nude and a bed sheet was wrapped around his hands and a pair of the man’s sweat pants was tied around his foot.
Mithu immediately shouted out for neighbours who quickly informed other relatives. They summoned the police.
A cousin of the dead man opined that the killer must have been someone the man knew. The relative said that everyone knew the man had a hearing defect. It was further said that the killer probably did not realize that Mithu was at home when they broke into the house.
“They had to think that he was not in the house and then when they saw him, they had no other alternative but to kill him,” the relative opined.
Other relatives who were present when this newspaper visited said that it was very strange that no one heard anything. All of the houses are nearby.
One relative said that someone had to hear when all those things were being lifted out of the man’s house.
This newspaper understands that this is the second brother who was murdered.
The dead man’s son said that an older brother was shot and killed in 1979.
Mithu leaves to mourn his three children, his parents and 10 brothers and sisters. Meanwhile this newspaper was reliably informed that two persons were taken into custody by the police.
Sources have said that the two persons are husband and wife and are habitual drug users.
The police are still continuing their investigations.
Only a year ago Mithu’s neighbour businessman, Dewan Roshan, was shot during a robbery at his home. He died a few days later at the Georgetown Public Hospital without regaining consciousness.
Roshan was shot just above the belly button when two bandits invaded his home and robbed him of some $80,000 from his grocery shop. No one was arrested or charged for the murder.
