– GPF members did a fine job as well
By Rawle Welch
Congratulations must be extended to the Organising Committee of the Rising Sun Turf Club for pulling off a well run Mashramani Race Meeting last Sunday, at Arima Park on the West Coast of Berbice.
Perhaps, mindful of the unhelpful criticisms that surfaced in this section of the newspapers sometime last year, the Committee pulled out all the stops in ensuring that what obtained in the past did not recur and for this it must be commended.
Member of the Organising Committee Fazal Habibulla speaking with Kaieteur Sport a few days before the Meet did promise to put everything in place to curtail the encroachment of fans onto the track and it must be noted that ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) did a wonderful job with the limited resources in restricting such behaviour and they too must be applauded.
It was good to see turfites almost immediately respond to the request made by the Organisers to put an end to an old habit and this act of responsibility which is to ensure human and animal safety becomes the pattern of the day by all the clubs that host race Meets.
There were a few turfites who defied the ruling not to encroach on the track, but there numbers were extremely small in comparison with what obtained in the past and it is only a matter of time before they begin to comply with the appeal by the authorities which is to totally desist from entering the track when a race is in progress.
However, it would be remiss of me not to mention one particular incident that occurred which must now awake all Organisers planning to host future Meetings.
It occurred in the final race which was the feature event where two horses tangled as they approached the turn for home, sending both jockeys in the saddle tumbling to the turf. Fortunately, none of the two jockeys were seriously hurt, but what it did was bring into focus the need to have medical personnel at the track to offer preliminary assistance in the event of a serious mishap.
This is an area that will need urgent attention by those responsible for the sport.
One of the jockeys was taken to a Medical Institution for treatment to what looked like minor injuries, while the other received attention at the track.
It must be noted, however, that nothing should be taken for granted in a sport which creates much excitement, but also where serious incidents could occur.
That was the one negative on a day that produced some exciting races and good entertainment for the fans and I’m certain that all the other Organisers know now what is expected and will put plans in place to duplicate or even surpass the standard witnessed last Sunday.
This newspaper will be paying a keen eye on upcoming Meets.
