Reigning 55 and over doubles champions Maxie Fox and Steve Surujbally outplayed Bobby Khan/Roy Rampersaud 6-1, 7-5 to maintain their dominance in that category as play in the Mings Products & Services Tennis Tournament opened last Friday, at the Pegasus Hardcourts.
In the Men’s 35 & over Singles division, Andre Lopes weathered an early onslaught by Harry Panday to emerge victorious in their clash, defeating his opponent 7-6 (7-0), 6-2. Panday came out strong in the first set and was able to maintain the challenge of long rallies against Lopes. But after losing two set points, he clearly lost steam during the tie-breaker after which it was all Lopes who held his composure and went on to win.
In the Ladies 30 and over Singles, new faces in competitive women’s tennis, Scheherazade Khan and Otilia St Charles were given a chance to compete in a round robin format to prove their worth against the veteran Efanee Doobay.
The veteran Doobay proved too strong for both players as she defeated Khan 6-1, 6-3 and later return to beat St Charles 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
