– Going to C/bean c/ships in fine mettle
National champion and World Championship participant Abigail McDonald continued her mesmerising form with another sublime performance to capture the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) Open Tournament which was played on Sunday, at the Chamber of Commerce Building on Waterloo Street.
McDonald, who produced one of Guyana’s best performances to date at the world’s premier Scrabble event, again proved that on current form she is a notch above the opposition with a crushing display to secure five wins and a mammoth spread of 628 to relegate the consistent James Krakowsky into second place after he closed on four victories and a positive spread of 62, while Floyd Carmichael, who also had four victories, but ended on a negative spread of 150.
Former national champion Fred Collins could only muster three wins and a spread of 11.
Lindener Grace Hercules gave some of the top players a real scare when she went to the lunch break accounting for three important scalps including that of Collins, Krakowsky and McDonald.
Her winning streak, however, was cut by Gafoor whom she lost to by a spread of 99 and after that it was downhill as she failed to add to her tally, dropping the next two games as well to finish with a negative spread of 142.
The final round match between McDonald and Collins was a mere formality since the national champ had already secured the tournament by virtue of her tremendous spread thanks to huge 250+ wins against R.O Michael and Carmichael.
She also had wins against Gafoor, Krakowsky and Collins to maintain her dominance on the local circuit since her return from Malaysia.
Krakowsky’s podium consistency continued and that clearly underlined his value to the national team which is set to travel to Trinidad & Tobago next month for the Caribbean Championships.
Krakowsky will be making the national team for the first time and is widely regarded by his peers as Guyana’s secret weapon.
GASP will be having a booth for the Mashramani celebrations today which will be situated in front of Texaco Gas Station on Vlissengen Road.
Hot dogs compliments of Kays Diamonds and Bounty Farm Ltd. and beverages compliments of Banks DIH will be on sale.
