Britany van Lange ended what can be termed a dream meet claiming her 6th record as the curtain came down on the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Mashramani Meet which ended at the Castelani Pool yesterday afternoon.
Joining van Lange with record breaking performances on the day were Niall Roberts, Soroya Simmons and Serrano Gonsalves, a total of 15 records went through the window in the 3-day event which also served as trials for Guyana’s teams to the Inter Guiana, Goodwill and Carifta Games.
van Lange (girls 13-14) rewrote the record books for the 6th time, this time she erased Athena Gaskin’s 200M freestyle record of 2:22.47 set last August with a new mark of 2:21.32. Gaskin herself beat the previous record with a time of 2:22.40 but had to be contented with second place. van Lange also won the 100M butterfly in 1:19.95 and the 50M free in 30.06.
Soroya Simmons, also competing in the girl’s 13-14 category upstaged van Lange to claim her 2nd record of the meet. Simmons stormed to victory in 35.39 in the 50M backstroke, van Lange finishing in 36.73. The old record was set by Noelle Smith in August 2008.
Serrano Gonsalves inked his name into the record books for the first time at this meet when he out stroked Ronaldo Rodrigues to win the boys 13-14 50M backstroke in 32.71 erasing Niall Roberts’ November 2006 record of 31.87. Gonsalves was also triumphant in the 100M fly.
Roberts (boys 18&over) claimed his second record with a spirited performance in the 100M butterfly, clocking 1:00.20 to better Jamaal Sobers’ August 2009 record of 1:09.42. Roberts ended the meet in grand style with an exciting win in the 50M free.
He held off a stiff challenge from arch rival Fabian Binns to win in 24.77, Binns clocking 25.36 and Ewin Enmore further back with 27.74. Binns was matching Roberts for about 40M but faded as the race approached the end.
