Close relatives of 78-year old Rajkumarie Mahadeo have accused the police of failing to follow up on several possible leads that could result in the arrest of her killers.
They alleged that investigators are still to try to trace several threatening phone calls that an unidentified man made to Mahadeo before she was found strangled outside her Lusignan home last Christmas Eve Day.
The relatives also said that police have shown little interest in a statement that they received from a woman who said she suspects that her reputed husband might have some information about the case.
In the presence of a relative and a Kaieteur News reporter, the woman alleged that her reputed husband had left the home the day before Christmas Eve.
She alleged that he returned at around 06:00 hrs on Christmas Eve.
According to the woman, he appeared to be nervous, and she observed that his boots and clothing were muddy and that there were scratches on his back.
She also alleged that during the following days, she overheard her spouse speaking to someone on his cell phone and demanding that they pay him.
Kaieteur News has confirmed that the man, who is from Enmore, East Coast Demerara, was detained last week but has since been released.
A male Lusignan resident was also detained during the early stages of the investigation.
Police have said that they have suspects but lack the evidence to lay charges.
In a letter to Kaieteur News, Gautin Demi Mahadeo, one of the slain woman’s daughters, said that her mother, who lived alone, had complained about some obscene phone calls coming very late in the nights and could have recognised the voice of the caller.
According to the daughter, one of the calls was made in November, 2009.
She alleged that the caller said: “I know you are sleeping alone I gon come and kill you.”
“My mom doesn’t have a caller’s ID and when she told me I dismissed it as a prank call but cautioned her not to be out of the house after eight PM. My mom even showed me a bottle of water she takes with her upstairs so she won’t have to come downstairs if she is thirsty.”
Ms. Gautin Mahadeo alleged that after her mother was slain, she informed the police about the calls in the hope that they would try to get them traced.
“I asked if they can get a printout of all incoming calls made to my mom’s phone for that period of time. I was promised that would be done. After checking several times with the CID ranks investigating this matter I was told that GT&T hasn’t released the readout as yet.”
“I spoke to a senior official from GT&T who says he is unaware of any such request concerning my mom’s phone. According to the CID (rank), he had made a request for the printout of three days after my mom’s death. Six weeks after I’m still anxiously waiting. I’m pleading with GT&T to please release the information the police are seeking and Mr. Crime Chief, I’m begging, please see that your officers get my mom’s phone printout.”
“I want to believe that call will lead us somewhere.”
Rajkumarie Mahadeo was found dead on the parapet outside her home at around 05: 45 hrs last Christmas Eve Day.
She was still wearing two gold rings and gold earrings when her body was found, while her two silver bangles were found nearby.
A post mortem confirmed that she had been strangled.
Her relatives believe that Mrs. Mahadeo came out of her house to check on her cows. They suspect that the killers might have lured the elderly woman out of her home by interfering with her animals, which were grazing in a nearby pasture.
Mrs. Mahadeo’s relatives have told Kaieteur News that they want police to follow all the clues at their disposal “wherever they may lead.”
The family members are offering a
$1M reward for information that would lead to the solving of her murder, as well as the murder of her grandson, 18-year-old Trevor Julius Fung, who was slain on February 14, 2004.
