Demerara river boat mishap…
Relatives retrieved the badly decomposing bodies of 26-year old Malika Wilson and her three-year old son, Adam Wilson, who perished Friday evening in the Demerara River. The bodies were found in the vicinity of Charity in the Demerara River yesterday.
The woman’s husband, Collis Wilson, said that the bodies were only retrieved because of the relentless efforts by relatives.
The man said that the police only came around 15:00hrs yesterday to certify the bodies. He said that although relatives had reported the tragedy to the police, no one came to offer any assistance.
“We called the police and no one came. It was only after the bodies were found that the police came.”
The husband who was fighting to hold back tears, recounted that on Friday his wife Malika and his two children, four-year-old Malia and his only son Adam were all crossing the Demerara River. He said that they had left the Dalgin back-dam where he worked as a labourer, to purchase goods.
The distraught husband said that his daughter slipped and almost fell overboard and his wife jumped to save her.
Wilson said that after his wife managed to hold on to his daughter, the boat started to take in water and began to sink.
He said that his wife and children began to panic and he only managed to save his daughter.
“They all started screaming and meh wife asked me if I going and leave she, I grabbed my daughter and swim ashore and I tried to save all of them, but I could not,” the father said.
Wilson said that his wife who originated from the Pomeroon was only spending some time with him since he found work at Dalgin.
The couple has three other children, all girls who live with their grandmother at Pomeroon. According to the man, his wife and son would be buried either Monday or Tuesday. The woman and her son leave to mourn many other relatives.
