Former secretary of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Trevor Arno is very upbeat about the inaugural Pro/Am boxing card scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall this Friday, February 26 and is urging the public to support the initiative.
Arno reviewed the card and assures that the principals are all capable of providing action packed entertainment. He further pointed out that these boxers would be fighting frequently and as time goes by, would develop into exciting prospects for the future.
With just one week to go before the first bell rings, administrators of the GBBC have identified the boxers to compete on the inaugural card.
In what is expected to be a keenly contested middleweight affair, Edmond DeClou and Kwesi Jones clash for the third time. Jones won the first fight while DeClou rebounded to take the second. Both boxers have since intensified their training activities in order to come out victorious. Whichever way it goes fans can expect four blistering rounds.
The last time that light/heavyweight fighters, Pauline London and Shelly ‘The Boom’ Gibson clashed, London had employed a two fisted attack that had the heavier Gibson at sea. London had gone on to win that bout unanimously. This time around Gibson has promised to avenge that loss and judging from the intensity displayed in the gym, seems set to back her chat.
Paul Lewis (jnr) and Rudolph Fraser clash in a catchweight affair. They both employ contrasting attacks and defensive techniques which should provide just the type of excitement boxing buffs have been craving. Fraser is the rangy fighter while Lewis, short and stocky, would want to feel he has the advantage at close range.
The action commences with old rivals, Dexter Marques and Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers going after each other in a highly anticipated bantamweight affair. In their last fight, Marques had prevailed but Rogers had accused the referee of impartiality after he had called a halt to the bout. Rogers, who had said that he was ‘done in,’ will now have the perfect opportunity to reverse his fortunes.
The card would also witness several of the nation’s top amateur boxers on show. The boxers in this sector have always provided unorthodox and sustained excitement. The administrators of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) have selected from among the best of the stock and fans can expect four action packed bouts.
Among those contesting for honours is Rena David of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) against Ansila Charles of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym (HEBG). The two would engage in a three rounds featherweight affair. Edwin Richards (GDF) and Danishwar Narine (REP) would tangle in the flyweight division while Dexter Jordon (FYF) and Imran Khan (HE) square off in another flyweight fight.
In the final amateur fight of the night, GDF welterweight, Bert Braithwaite will match gloves with Republican, Damian Ross.
Boxing buffs unable to visit the arena may tune into NCN 11 for a live broadcast of the action. Fight time is 08:00hrs and the admission fee is $500.
