Guyana playing without experienced quartet of Auric Tappin, Leon Christian, Mark Agard and Robert Byass, were no match for Germany’s TTL Bombery, the first European Professional team to visit the “land of many waters”.
The German’s Pros also visited Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. They opened the Guyana leg of their Caribbean tour against a strong Georgetown line up at the National Sports Hall. The visitors’ line up included two players that represented Germany at the (1992) Barcelona Olympics – Kai Nurnberger and Mike Jackel and two former NBA players, Greg Butler and Clarence Svaderenger, they also had 7 foot 4 inches centre Arne Alig.
Georgetown was led by Colts United National Guard Eion ‘Wico’ Leitch, Dane Kendall, Gregory Wyles, Sean Semple and Robert Cadogan were the other members of the squad with Caricom Championship experience. They however failed to stop the Germans from inflicting a 26 points blowout in the series Opener. Olympian Mike Jackel top scored with 19 points while Patrick King and Robert Roschnaysky were equally devastating with 18 points each; another Olympian Clarence Svaerenger supported the trio with 13 points.
For Georgetown, Eagles Gregory Wyles top scored with 17 points – club mate Sean Semple had 14 points, Dane Kendall 12 points and Captain Eion Leitch 11 points.
In the second match of the series the Germans opposed the Guyana Basketball Federation President’s team. This team was a combination of players from Georgetown and Linden.
Colts United – Eion ‘Wico’ Leitch was appointed Captain; they feared worst than their Georgetown counterparts. They succumbed 109 to 77 losing by 32 points.
For TTL Bomberg Patrick King led with 16 points, Mike Jackel 19 points, Robert Roschnaysky 18 points. Colts Dane Kendall had an outstanding night for the President’s team.
His 23 points in a losing cause led all scorers. Wismar’s Piston Wayne Andries lent admirable support with 18 points. Gregory Wyles also had 12 points.
In the final game of the series, TTL Bomerg humbled the President’s team by 23 points 105 to 82. Mike Jackel and Robert Roschnaysky each finished with 20 points, while for the Guyana President’s team Wayne Andries had 20 points Robert Cadogan 15 points, skipper Eion Leitch 10 points and Gregory Wyles 9 points.
