Lethem, in the south of Guyana, recorded its first road fatality for the year when 67-year old Malcolm Goodrich was struck down by a speeding car on the access road to the international crossing on Friday afternoon.
Goodrich died on his way to the Lethem Hospital around 16:00 hours, without regaining consciousness.
Goodrich, a food vendor and a Guyanese who is originally from the Essequibo Coast, and who now resides in Bon Fin, Brazil, travelled across the border everyday to ply his trade.
According to reports, he was riding his bicycle heading back to Brazil when he was hit by the car which was being driven by a woman.
Eyewitnesses said that the driver of the car, a prominent Lethem businesswoman, who had overtaken another vehicle, lost control and slammed into Goodrich who was proceeding in the opposite direction.
So severe was the impact that Goodrich and his bicycle were hurled into the air before landing several yards away.
The driver of the car was detained but was released along with her vehicle less than 24 hours after the accident.
