It was tough going for Caribbean Under-15 girls’ champion Victoria Arjoon in the lone Category ‘B’ match against Joven Benn on Friday night as the Toucan Industries Mashramani Junior Tournament continued, at the Georgetown Club Courts.
Category ‘A’ players had the night off which made the encounter the premier game of the evening.
Arjoon, who has been undefeated on the Junior Caribbean Squash Circuit throughout her career pulled a few tricks out of the bag in the first set surprising her older opponent and raced to a quick 13-11 victory.
Benn recovered well in the second stanza, engaging Arjoon in longer rallies and profited from his exceptional fitness and good retrieving ability, before winning by a clear margin, 11-5.
By the third set both players had a reasonable measure of each other, trading the early points. Benn appeared to have the upper hand as Arjoon, clearly unused to being on the losing end showed some frustration.
She, however, managed to reel off a series of sharp front court shots, playing with more patience and concentration, leaving Benn short several times and took the game 11-8.
By the fourth the power-hitting match was beginning to favour the older and stronger Benn who raced out to an early 4-1 lead.
Arjoon needing to shorten the rallies made several uncharacteristic unforced errors. The errors reduced later in the game, but the rallies lengthened allowing Benn to stay in the match and win 11-6.
Arjoon, in the fifth rolled out several exquisite winners, but was unable to avoid the unforced errors. It quickly became Benn’s game and match as he raced to victory 11-4.
