Devon Boatswain of the Guyana Defence Force and Stephon Gouveia of the Harpy Eagles turned in impressive performances to win their respective fights and eventually earned the best boxer prizes up for grabs when the Harpy Eagles, in conjunction with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, staged a nine fight boxing card to mark the reopening of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym yesterday afternoon.
For their efforts both boxers were awarded a cheque for five thousand dollars and a trophy compliments of Vice President of the GABA and the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports respectively.
Gouveia steamrolled his gym mate, Imran Khan in three rounds of entertaining boxing. Both boxers lashed out at each other from the onset with Khan enjoying some bright moments early in the first stanza. Gouveia quickly asserted himself and lashed out backing his opponent to the ropes on numerous occasions. Khan valiantly stood his ground and matched his opponent’s every move.
The difference in fitness, where Gouveia was obviously the superior, began to show around the latter half of the second frame when Gouveia connected with several body and head shots. Khan could not find any answers for the onslaught and the fight that was otherwise close up to that point began to slip away from him. At the end of the bout almost everyone was in agreement that Khan had thrown away the bout in the latter half of the fight. The judges concurred.
The Khan/Gouveia fight was the preamble to the Boatswain/Thomas middleweight contest in the elite category. From the onset the fight had all the ingredients of a classic and the principals did not disappoint. Thomas launched an early attack to the body and head of Boatswain. The latter boxer, carrying the sobriquet ‘Killer’ sported a muscular physique and plodded behind his man, matching his every blow.
The crowd screamed in delight when Boatswain connected with a one two combination that forced the referee to institute a mandatory eight count. Thomas took his blows like a man and ended the round commendably, pounding away at Boatswain.
If the first round was the declaration, the second round was the declaration of the war. Craig drew first blood with a right cross that jolted Boatswain and forced him to retreat. Not to be outdone, the soldier retaliated with a combination that forced Craig on his bicycle. As the round wound down both warriors began to show the effects of the grueling bout. The bell must have been a welcome sound.
They went in tired at the end of the second frame and came out rejuvenated in the third. Both were intent on hurting the other as much as possible and the large crowd was the benefactor. The spectators screamed as first Boatswain then Thomas connected with savage shots. Boatswain then surged ahead with two ramrod shots that had Thomas seeking refuge behind a high guard. ‘The Killer’ then moved in for the kill and launched a few bombs into Thomas’ body and face. It was only when the bell sounded that Boatswain eased the onslaught. The judges formulized the decision giving Boatswain a 2-1 decision.
The tournament saw a welcome return of the Republican Boxing gym to national competition. They experienced mixed fortunes after Delroy Nero dropped a 3-0 decision to Roy Smith of Timerhi Warriors. Trelon Munroe compensated for his gym mate when he earned a 3-0 decision over Sherwyn Clarke of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym.
Other results are: U-15 (75-79 pounds) Seon Griffith (FYF) defeated Joel Williamson (PRBG), Jermaine Agard (FYF) overcame Donald Trap (TW), Antoine Branch (HE) defeated his gym mate Keith Bobb Semple, while Javade Richards (HE) proved to be too good for his gym mate Orin Bancroft (HE), while Keeve Allicok earned a 3-0 decision over Mark Anthony. The final bout in the light/heavyweight division saw Trelon Munroe prevailing over Sherwyn Clarke (PRBG).
