After three days of heated competition at the finals of the Children’s Mashramani competition staged at the National Cultural Centre, it is time for the grand culmination of events with the annual Children’s Road parade.
Touted to be a spectacular showcase, the event gets underway from the parade ground at 10:00hrs today and co-ordinators say persons lining the roads can expect a colourful and very topical showcase along the route.
According to the event co-ordinator, the nation’s youth with assistance from their teachers and parents have worked to improve the competitive edge and as such patrons can expect quality thought provoking presentations tinged with the celebratory flavours of Mashramani on the parade.
Co-ordinator Desiree Wyles-Ogle said that today’s parade will feature students, both male and female, prancing along the route depicting Myths and Legends, Fantasy, Fairytales and Social Commentary as well as celebratory showcases that depict the 2010 Mashramani theme.
On Wednesday, the national schools’ competition began with children representing all ten administrative regions taking on each other in Dance and masquerade and Georgetown ruled.
Then on Thursday the youths competed in categories of Calypso and dramatic poetry where region 10 ruled and youths aged between 5-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17 took the spotlight.
From the showcases yesterday there are some very interesting pieces done by the youths, their parents and teachers. These focus on various pertinent youth and national issues including the much talked about LCDS.
Yesterday, the individual costume pieces were showcased in competition and today unlike in previous years, the group presentations will be judged when scores of youths from all of the regions, seven children’s organisations as well as the nursery schools tots and private school students, take to the regular children’s road parade route.
Co-ordinator Desiree Wyles –Ogle says the main prizes are trophies and cash.
