The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation has named a 15-man team that will represent the Land of Many Waters at the 4th Annual International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) / North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) / Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships which will be held in Guyana for the first time from March 18-20, 2010.
The competition which will attract competitors from across the Region is set for the Princess Hotel, Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Guyana’s most successful lifter at the Regional and International level, ‘Big’ John Edwards who is also the reigning NAPF Regional and Pan American champion in the 40 plus and open 125 divisions is the most accomplished athlete on Guyana’s team that will be aiming to take the team championship apart from chasing individual glory. Edwards will be competing in both categories next month.
Another reigning NAPF Regional and Pan American champion in the 82.5kg class, Randolph Morgan along with 2009 NAPF Regional gold and Pan American silver medalist Mervyn ‘Spongy’ Moses (75kg) have been named.
Guyana’s first Pan American gold medalist Winston Stoby who will compete in the 82.5kg Masters division is the other athlete with international experience on the Guyana team. Stoby is the 2009 Masters M1 national champion.
Sensational junior lifter 18 year-old Vijay Rahim and Anis Ade Thomas the first junior in Guyana to dead lift 600 pounds will spearhead Guyana’s quest for top honours in the Men’s Sub Junior and Junior classes.
Rahim, the 2009 national champion will compete in the 56kg division with Thomas, who is also the national champ in the 82.5kg class, are set to roll heads. Thomas will also seek to conquer the opposition in the open class.
The other two juniors are the Immamdeen brothers, Wazeem, national 60kg champ and Tariq who placed 3rd. Wazeem will also compete in the Men’s open.
The others competing in the Masters division are Errol ‘Big Man’ Henry, the reigning national champion in the 90kg category, Edwin Spencer who will also compete in the 90kg class and Bhojkumar Jagnarine (82.5kg), the 2008 Men’s Open champion.
The others battling in the senior class are Kelvin Lewis (67.5) current national champion; Ryan Williams (75kg) who took the runner up spot at last year’s nationals; Karel Mars (100kg) 2009 national champ; Farouk Abdool (110kg) 2008 national champ and Mark Seymour, the 2009 national champion who is aiming to blow away all and sundry in the 110kg class.
The manager of the team is Andrew Austin with Wendell McPherson, the Head Coach.
