– get preferential treatment
The two policemen who allegedly accepted a $20,000 inducement were yesterday placed on $50,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Detective Sergeant, Radesh Persaud, 37, of 91 Sixth Street La Bonne Intention and Nauth Sukar, of 142 Hope Low Lands, who is a Detective Lance Corporal, are accused of attempting to pervert and obstruct the course of justice when they allegedly collected $20,000 from Tenisha Butcher.
The money was allegedly an inducement to prevent the woman from forbearing prosecution in a criminal matter. The complainant was not present in court yesterday.
They both pleaded not guilty and were represented by attorneys at law Sandal Kissoon in association with Glenn Hanoman.
Kissoon, who addressed the court, said that Persaud has been a member of the Guyana Police Force for 17 years, and Sukar for 15 years.
The lawyer noted that both defendants were never charged criminally or departmentally. Kissoon further told the court that the charge which was read to his clients is bad in law. He asked for bail in a reasonable sum.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford did not oppose bail, but asked that it be substantial.
The prosecutor also asked that the defendants report to the Criminal Investigation Department on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays pending the determination of the matter.
The matter was adjourned until March 16; it was also transferred to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
Yesterday, as reporters were waiting for the officers to be passed through the prisoners’ chute, they were however given the option of changing their clothing and they managed to slip through the front gate.
When they appeared before the magistrate the officers were fully clothed in shirts and pants.
When they ran through the gate they were wearing coloured jerseys and pants.
The magistrate was not on the bench at the time this took place. One senior police official who was present at court was highly annoyed at yesterday preferential treatment that the officers received.
Usually what happens when bail is granted the accused is placed into the chute and would wait in the court lock-ups until bail is posted.
However, Persaud and Sukar sat in the courtroom until bail was posted and then they were allowed through the front gate.
When the reporters realised what had taken place the two policemen were already running into a vehicle on the Avenue of the Republic.
The official said that if police officers condone those actions, it only breaks down the already broken system.
The two policemen were nabbed with marked cash which was supposed to constitute a bribe.
The two ranks were arrested on Tuesday after one of them received cash from Butcher who was released from custody.
Reports reaching this newspaper had indicated that the two policemen had demanded cash from the woman after she was detained on a larceny charge.
