Athletes from the University of Guyana will join others from other local clubs for the Guyana leg of the Queen’s Baton relay for the XIX Commonwealth Games ending at the UG Tarmac on February 26 next.
According to Sports Coordinator of the University of Guyana, Seivewright Benjamin, several male and female athletes from the tertiary institution will participate in the event. Among them are Kiev Chesney and Sofie Carsar, two of the outstanding athletes in the recent UG Inter-faculty athletics competition.
Over the years, the Queen’s Baton Relay has evolved into a powerful symbol of the unity and diversity of the Commonwealth of Nations. With each Games, the tradition grows in scale and significance, attracting more nations, involving more participants and generating more excitement than ever before.
The first Queen’s Baton was created for a relay to celebrate the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games in Wales. Since then the Queen’s Baton Relay has become a much loved Games tradition.
The Baton contains a message from Her Majesty, the Queen and is a marvel of artistry and technology as it captures images and sounds which will be displayed on the Games website.
It contains a Global Positioning System which transmits its position to the website and Light-emitting Diodes which will change to the colour of the Golden Arrowhead while in Guyana. The Baton will visit every Commonwealth country in the lead up to the Games.
