Two detectives who were nabbed with marked cash that was supposed to constitute a bribe are expected to appear in court today.
Police Commissioner Henry Greene yesterday confirmed that the police had received the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, recommending charges for the detectives.
The two ranks were arrested on Tuesday, minutes after one of them accepted the cash from a female who was previously released from police custody.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the ranks, a Sergeant and a Lance Corporal, both attached to the Sparendaam Police Station, had demanded the cash from the woman for them to take a certain course after she was detained on a larceny allegation.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman contacted other police officials and told them about the demands.
A plan was set up for the woman to go along with the scheme and hand over some marked $1000 bills which amounted to $20,000 to the detectives.
One of the ranks collected the cash and was promptly arrested. The other detective was subsequently implicated.
Meanwhile, the woman is accusing the police of adopting intimidating tactics in an effort to stop her from testifying against the cops.
The woman told this newspaper that yesterday she observed a police vehicle with three ranks inside, parked in front of her yard, and upon taking out her cellular phone, the vehicle sped away.
She is also claiming that several persons are calling her on behalf of the arrested cops for her to decline to testify in the matter.
A senior police officer indicated that the woman should report these occurrences to the police so that further action can be taken.
