Club house/indoor range & refurbishing of Timehri Ranges priorities for 2010
Commodore Gary Best was returned unopposed as President of the Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA) for another year following the Association’s Annual General Meeting which took place on Wednesday evening at the Roof Gardens of the Bank of Guyana.
The only position that was contested on the night was that of Small Bore Vice-Captain which saw Mohammed Qualander defeating Johan De Silva.
The other elected Executive members are Vice Presidents Attorney-at-Law Richard Fields S.C. and Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul Slowe, Honorary Secretary Ryan Sampson, Treasurer Lt. Col. Terry Stewart, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Lancelot Hinds, Full Bore Captain Mahendra Persaud, Full Bore Vice-Captain Dylan Fields, Small Bore Captain Joe Chin, Committee Members Johan De Silva, Ransford Goodluck and Hemant Narine.
The two Internal Auditors are Dale Hing and Rakesh Persaud.
In thanking the members for entrusting the leadership of the Association to him for another year, Commodore Best stated that the two main projects his executive will embark will be the acquisition of land for their club house/indoor range and the improvement of the Timehri Rifle and Pistol Ranges to international standards.
The Guyana Defense Force will be collaborating with the GNRA on the Timehri Ranges project which will include the Warden House, hut and target mechanisms.
The Association has already begun work on the newly designed target mechanisms with two being installed.
According to Honorary Secretary Ryan Sampson who presented a comprehensive report outlining the work of the Association during the period under review (2009), the Association received a letter from the Ministry of Housing allocating them land at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo but that is not suitable.
The GNRA through its President who has been at the forefront of this issue will be seeking audience with the Minister of Housing and Water to obtain land at Diamond, East Bank Demerara to construct a state of the art club house and indoor range.
Sampson noted that having such facilities will immensely contribute to an increase in competitiveness of their members (shooters) and will create the opportunity for the Association to earn income.
The Association had also proposed to build the Club House on the St. Stanislaus Old Students Association ground, with the understanding that they {Association} would maintain the entire ground. This is still a work in progress as the association awaits a response from the Saints Association’s Executive.
Some other projections the GNRA has for the year.
* The Full Bore Section training will be focused on seeking to retain team titles and all individual titles at the WIFBSC, team training being paramount.
* The Small Bore Section will seek to improve the level of competitiveness among all the shooters, with a view to competing regionally.
* In the area of fundraising the association will implement the fund raising activities that can attain maximum profits.
* Increasing active membership by at least 25%.
* Targeting of new sponsors for the Associations activities.
