Come this Sunday at the once World Famous GCC ground Bourda, four of Guyana’s leading football clubs will be locked in keen battles as they combine efforts to raise funds for the Haitian Football Federation which was destroyed just over one month ago when a 7.0 magnitude earth quake ravished the city of Port-au-Prince.
At the time the earth quake hit, the Haitian Football Federation Executive was meeting and it was reported that about 30 of their members perished. Only President John Bart survived.
The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and the Kashif & Shanghai Organisation have teamed up to bring off Sunday’s double header which will see all proceeds presented to the Haiti Football Association at the XXX111Ordinary Congress of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad February 25 – 28, 2010.
Clashing in Sunday’s opening game from 18:00hrs will be the most successful team at the Kashif and Shanghai tournament five-time champions Bakewell Topp XX and the Guyana Defense Force.
The main attraction featuring current K&S Champs B.K International Western Tigers and former Champs Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United.
While this is a fund raiser for a sister federation, the teams will be aiming to stamp their authority as the 2010 season beckons. The GFF National Super League is gearing up to kick off on the last day of February and no team will take the other for granted.
Alpha, also preparing for their second stint at the CFU Club Championship has been training twice daily under Head Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover and are anxious to test their match readiness ahead of the National Super League. Their opponents, Western Tigers will be aiming to prove that their K&S maiden triumph was no fluke and they can be potent challengers against Guyana’s leading club side.
The Tigers are also seeking to rebound from their loss to Topp XX a few weeks ago when they clashed at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in another Haiti fund raising game organised by a Linden based group.
Team Alpha will come from Captain Howard ‘Twin Tower’ Lowe, Kelvin Mc Kenzie, Shawn Bishop, Philbert Moffatt, Ronson Williams, Dwain Jacobs, Abesi Pc Pherson, Dwight Peters, Quincy Madramootoo, Gordon Henry, Elton Brown, Andrew Murray and new recruits Chris Comacho, Anthony Belfield and Jermaine Murray.
The Tigers will look to the likes of Devon Millington, Colin Nelson, Bevon Moseley, Gideon Payne, Fruta Conquerors, Oswald Cornette, Odel Williams, K&S MVP Derrick Carter, Sherman David, Ryan Thomas, Eron Hayde, Dwayne Ali, Maxwell Pellew, Travis Bess and Vashil Cantzlaar to guide them to a win.
Like Alpha, the Guyana Defense Force will be competing at the CFU Club Championship for the first time and will be taking their game against Topp XX seriously.
The GDF will host St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ System3 in the first game of a home and away tie on March 12 here and are aiming to get into the mode of winning making the clash against Topp XX a potentially explosive encounter.
The Army will also be eager to test their new recruits as they seek to have a well oiled unit. Appearing for the first time with the Army side will be Telson Mc Kinnon formerly of Sunburst Camptown, Peter Parks (GFC) and Ike Garraway (Seawall FC). They will combine their skills with Royon Morrison, Warren Gilkes, Selwyn Isaacs, Shavane Seaforth, Delon Young, Delroy Deen, Devon Harris, Desford Williams, Eusi Phillips, Keron Joseph, Kevin Lewis, Seon Brewley, Shiek Kamal, Stellon David and some of the younger brigade, Hubert Pedro, Stevon Dolphin and Shawn Arthur.
Head Coach is Brazilian Edson Gabriel dos Santos with Assistants Marlon Washington and Calvin ‘Flu’ Allen.
Topp XX’s bid will be spearheaded by Player/Coach Kayode ‘The Magician’ Mc Kinnon, Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules, goalkeeper Carlos Brown, Quacy Johnson, Michael Crandon, Ruel Williams, Keiron Cameron, Jamie Wilson, Ron Fiedtkou, Keon Sears and Troy Nelson.
