-Grassroots progress to create regional success
By Edison Jefford
Elected Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) President, David Patterson made his case for the post on the pillars of his 13-point developmental proposal for basketball, which was tabled at the Annual General Meeting.
High on the list of priorities for his administration is the establishment and regularisation of sub-associations across the country in an effort to decentralise basketball. He wants the sport officially recognised everywhere it is played. In that regard, Patterson and team plan to expand the membership of the federation which will take the form of encouraging other interest groups, locally and internationally, to become “affiliate, associate or honorary” members.
The provision of logistical support to clubs and associations was the third point listed. It also included technical support to ensure that those organisations are properly constituted to function as the foundation of the federation.
The proposal included the formalisation of constitutional committees and the revision of the GABF constitution to bring it on par with its international affiliates, FIBA and Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) regulation and rules.
Under Coaches, Patterson wants “to develop a pool of certified coaches with all level one coaches being FIBA accredited.” A national instructor was also proposed to identify and train resource persons through CBC for the federation.
It is hoped that those fundamental developmental systems will help Guyana return to the Caribbean Championships. The GABF hopes that it will put them in good shape to be the host of either the 2011 or 2013 regional competition.
The proposal pointed out that Guyana will attempt to host, at minimum, two international tournaments every year. This is geared at bringing local players on par with those that are campaigning internationally to level the playing field.
In his tenure as GABF President, Patterson wants to increase the pool of accredited FIBA referees from three to six. He said that would be done over three years with one being on the receiving end of accreditation every year from this year.
There will also be aggressive mechanisms implanted to develop youth basketball, hosts a few internal tournaments and raise funds. The Georgetown sub-association had asked the new GABF head to outline his developmental plan.
