Harper urges Corporate Guyana to support youth cricket
By Sean Devers
It is said that our youth is our future and yesterday the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) embarked on another step in the revival of cricket in Guyana and the West Indies with the launching of the 2010 Nalico/Nafico 50-over under-15 cricket competition.
At a time when off-the-field problems is undermining what transpires on the field, the continued collaboration of Nalico/Nafico and the DCB for the staging of their 5th annual competition is an important step in the right direction for the development of Guyana’s emerging players.
The launching and presentation of the sponsorship worth $450,000 was done at the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Secretariat at Bourda and Shivraj Singh, the company’s Manager-Life Administration, said that in addition to the $450,000, the sponsors will also pay for uniforms for teams reaching the semi-finals.
“We are pleased to be once again a part of the DCB under-15 competition, since when we initially began sponsorship five years ago we gave our commitment to long-term support of the tournament,” Singh said.
He added that it was the Companies way of giving back to the community and contributing to the development of a sport which is still the most popular game in Guyana and the West Indies.
“We (Nalico/Nafico) feel that supporting youth development is an important area in any nation and making it possible for the best under-15 cricketers from Demerara to play at a competitive level is a main reason we support this competition. We give our commitment to continue as sponsors,” Singh disclosed.
Singh’s unrelated namesake Bissoon Singh, the DCB President, said Nalico/Nafico has set a wonderful example and demonstrates the power of Corporate Guyana to effect the development of cricket and said the DCB greatly appreciates their generosity and commitment.
“This sponsorship of the Inter-Association U-15 competition in Demerara will not only aid in the development of cricket at this level but provide the DCB’s selection panel the opportunity to select the best possible team for the Inter-County games,” Bissoon Singh declared.
The four-team competition (E/Bank, G/Town, W/Dem & E/Coast) is scheduled to start on Friday with matches at Canal Number 2 in West Bank Demerara and Providence on the East Bank.
The DCB head, who is also a Vice-President on the GCB, thanked the sponsors and encouraged the public to support the young players, especially parents and guardians, by attending the matches.
Former West Indies player and Coach Roger Harper, the newest executive of the DCB and new member of the GCB’s Cricket Development Committee, congratulated the sponsors for their investment in youth and stressed that if West Indies cricket is to improve, the focus and emphasis must be on our youth players.
Harper, the President of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) said it is important that Corporate Guyana contribute to the sport and not only competition but youth programmes to aid in the development of the young players to take the sport forward.
In Friday’s opening round, defending champions Georgetown battle West Demerara at Canal Number 2 and East Coast face East Bank at Providence.
The action continues on February 22 when East Coast play Georgetown at DCC and West Demerara take on East Bank at Canal Number 2.
The final round of the round-robin league competition is fixed for February 24 when West Demerara oppose East Coast at Wales and Georgetown come up against East Bank at Providence.
The final is set for DCC on February 26 with the two teams with the most points facing off for the Nalico/Nafico title.
According to the DCB, a list of no more than 20 players must be submitted by each Association to the DCB Competitions committee before the commencement of the tournament, while a fine of $5,000 and a suspension of both guilty player and Association will be imposed for over-aged or non-registered players participating in the competition.
