President’s College is now the first dormitory school in the country to benefit from the Youth Friendly Service Programme.
The initiative was officially launched yesterday at the school, by Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy. It was fully endorsed by a representative of the Ministry of Education.
President’s College is the first in the line up of 14 other dormitory schools in which the programme will be launched soon.
The school is also the 21st location at which the Youth Friendly Service has been implemented.
Director of Adolescence Health, Dr. Marcia Paltoo, lamented the point that currently there are very limited health services for adolescence in Guyana.
“There is a gap in health services available to youths in Guyana; there are unlimited services for adults and infants…but it must be noted that adolescents have different needs from adults and infants,” Dr. Paltoo pointed out.
She further urged the students to make full use of the services that will be available to them. Among the services that will be provided to the students are counseling, information on sexually transmitted disease, and soon to be introduced testing at different intervals if the need arises. At all times there will be the school nurse on duty and a special room in the school’s compound has been dedicated for the centre.
The programme was fully endorsed by the Ministry of Education. Dionne Brown of the Ministry said that the initiative is a very timely one in that it falls in well with their strategic plan for child friendly spaces. Brown added that such a programme is needed in an environment where teens are susceptible to drug use, sexually transmitted diseases among others.
Delivering the feature address was Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy.
He too lauded the efforts of his team at the Ministry of Health who was responsible for the proper execution of the initiative.
He further urged the students and teachers of President’s College to adopt better lifestyles in order to reach past the target of life expectancy.
He too urged the students to make the best of the service which will be available to them. He stated that it is his hope that with the services they will in turn make better choices in life.
