– Grabs match haul of 13-154
By Rawle Welch
The Leeward Islands once again led by a rejuvenated Omari Banks comfortably formalised their first win in this year’s WICB Regional First Class Tournament after coasting to a 53 runs triumph against the Windwards yesterday, at the GCC ground.
Banks, who started the day with two wickets to his name, claimed four more to end with 6-113 off 31 overs and a match haul of 13-154. That was in addition to his strong batting performances in both innings where he made 30 and 57 respectively to crown a fine all-round display.
The Windwards resumed their innings on 128-4 with Andre Fletcher on 46 and Nelon Pascal on 11, still needing a further 192 for victory or the option of batting out the day’s play which seemed improbable with the way Banks and company were bowling.
They got off to a disastrous start when Pascal, who had added just a single run to his overnight score, prodded forward to the off-spin of Banks and only succeeded in providing Montcin Hodge with his third catch of the innings fielding at forward short leg.
The total was then 137 which meant that just nine runs were added for the morning with Fletcher managing to post his half century during the period.
It came up in 74 minutes off 71 deliveries and contained 4 fours and a solitary maximum.
The stocky Donwell Hector was the next man in and he along with an unusually subdued Fletcher battled for survival, brining up the Windwards 150 in the 46th over and they proceeded to 179, before Hector played down the wrong line and was given leg before to the persevering Banks for 15.
Any chance of the Windwards getting the victory target or saving the match rested surely on the pair of Fletcher and new batsman Rawl Lewis, but that was not to be because Lewis, who had looked a shadow of himself with the bat in the first innings pushed out at a faster delivery from Banks and could only look on in shock to see Steven Liburd hold on to a stunning reflex action catch at silly mid-off. He made just 3 and the total was then 185-7 with lunch still sometime away.
Shane Shillingford, who had batted with aplomb in the first innings strode out to the middle, obviously cognizant of the fact that another long knock was needed together with Fletcher, but that was not to be as the latter, who up to that time seemed to be batting comfortably and in sight of a hundred had just tickled spinner Justin Athanaze down to fine leg for a boundary, decided that he would try a sweep shot this time only to see Lionel Baker settle under the ball and hold an easy catch.
He made 80 with 6 fours and one six off 142 balls, but it was a disappointing way to go after such hard work and it appeared only a matter of time before the game ended.
Deighton Butler came next to partner Shillingford, but any intention they harboured of delaying the inevitable quickly dissipated after adding one run together. Shillingford danced down the wicket to Athanaze and was left stranded, giving wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton the easiest of chances to effect a stumping. His contribution was a mere three runs.
Kenroy Peters was the last man in and when all thought that the innings was going to fold swiftly he had other ideas hammering all and sundry to all parts of the sward in an entertaining display, taking the Windwards to 232-9 at Lunch with his personal tally on 27 including 6 luscious fours.
He continued his onslaught after the break, smashing Banks for some lusty blows and reached a well deserved half century in the process.
However, the match finally came to a conclusion when Liburd brought back Cornwall and he almost immediately reaped the reward, trapping Peters for 52.
His knock lasted 36 balls in 40 minutes and was littered with 8 fours and 2 sixes.
