Minister’s request to the Guyana Medical Council

Dear Editor,

I feel compelled to write a response to a story carried in Kaieteur News on February 14th 2009, captioned, “Health Minister asks Medical Council to review doctor’s suspension”.

Minister Ramsammy is quoted as saying the police physician was damned if he did and damned if he didn’t. He was also quoted as saying that the doctor had two options; one was to walk away and not treat the teen and the other was to treat the teen with his head covered.

I must place on record how shocked I am by such a statement. Essentially Minister Ramsammy is saying that in order for the doctor, a qualified professional, to continue performing the duties of police physician he must compromise his professional integrity, he must condone torture and inhumane treatment; he must neglect the Hippocratic Oath he took several years ago when he became a doctor and now the torture that has been committed by rogue elements of the Guyana Police Force and seemingly sanctioned by some in the corridors of power.

I hope the President or Dr Luncheon reads the story and deal with the Minister, since his statement and position on the matter is a stinging indictment on the administration.

Minister Ramsammy has insinuated that the police doctor has no jurisdiction over a patient that is brought before him for medical care; the rogue police elements and those that condone crimes against humanity have the final say as to the conditions under which a patient will be seen by a doctor.

Minister Ramsammy is obviously losing his mind. I refuse to believe that Minister Ramsammy thinks that no form of re-course was available to the doctor when a patient who is detained by the police appears before him with his head covered and who seemingly obtained serious burns while in custody.

But you know what, maybe Dr Ramsammy is right, the doctor might have been “damned” for doing the right thing and saying no to torture.
