– need a further six wickets to gain full points
Six more wickets is all the Leeward Islands need today to secure their first outright win against the Windwards in their WICB Regional First Class clash which is being played, at the GCC ground, Bourda.
Set a formidable 320 for victory, the Windwards closed the day on 128-4, still requiring a further 192 runs to avoid defeat. At the wicket is Andre Fletcher on 46 not out and night watchman Nelon Pascal on 11 and they will need to bat for a long period today to prevent the Leewards from gaining full points.
Fletcher has so far hit three fours and a solitary six off 68 balls in his innings, while Pascal belted two boundaries in his short stint at the crease. Omari Banks with 2-35 from 12 overs and Anthony Martin 2-51 off 14 were the bowlers to take the wickets to fall.
Earlier, openers Devon Smith and Keddy Lesporis started their run chase shortly after the Tea interval and they put on a commendable 56 for the first wicket, before the latter went leg before to leg-spinner Anthony Martin for 31 which included two fours, a five and two sixes from 39 balls.
Smith and Fletcher added a further 21 runs when Martin struck again, this time he had Smith snapped up at forward short leg by Montcin Hodge for 25 laced with four sparkling boundaries off 49 deliveries.
Liam Sebastien, who had recorded a career best 143 in the previous game against Barbados, arrived at the crease to partner the typically aggressive Fletcher, but after scoring just three runs, he went via a similar route, caught at forward short leg by Hodge off Omari Banks bowling with the total on 90.
Wicketkeeper Lyndon James was promoted up the order and together with Fletcher took the score to 104 when he offered a simple return catch to off-spinner Banks. He made 5.
That brought out Pascal and he and Fletcher averted any further collapse, adding 24 runs for the partnership when play ended.
The Leewards begun the day on 22 without loss with Hodge on 12 and Mali Richards on 9 and in their haste to accumulate quick runs were dismissed for 198 in 63 overs with Banks hitting a top-score of 57, while other useful contributions came from Captain Steven Liburd 48, Keiron Powell 29 and Richards 20.
The pick of the bowlers for the Windwards was Pascal, who grabbed 4-40 off 13 overs, Rawl Lewis 3-39 from 15 and Shane Shillingford 2-42 off 13.
