Guyana distinguished itself at the IRB World Sevens Series tournament in Las Vegas on Saturday by drawing 12 all with France, one of the top 12 core teams in the series as they endured mixed fortunes.
Dominic Lespierre, who plays professional rugby in the UK and whose mother is Guyanese and joined the team in Vegas, registered Guyana’s first try of the tournament from a brilliant run down the wing after receiving a pass from Kevin McKenzie in the first 4 minutes of the game in which Guyana generally dominated the run of play.
Half time saw the two teams tied at 5 all. Guyana, continuing to dominate, scored again early in the second half with a strong run through the French defence, Kevin McKenzie converting his try to put Guyana ahead 12 -5, but with seconds left in the game, France broke from their own 25 metre line to even the score 12 all.
Guyana was pooled in the first day of the International tournament with world champions New Zealand, 5th ranked Australia and 9th rated France.
Guyana went down 31-0 to Australia in their first taste of international competition having held them to a 0-7 half time score. However, as expected Guyana were outclassed by world power house New Zealand 49 nil.
Guyana will take on USA in the Bowl Quarter-finals and depending on whether they win or loose, play Scotland or Argentina in the Bowl or Shield Semi-finals.
The World Sevens Series will conclude today and the Guyana team will return home on Tuesday to prepare to host the Central American & Caribbean Games Rugby Sevens on July 17 followed by the Caribbean Rugby Championships. Guyana are the defending champions.
