Fraser, Ageday impressive in sprint events
Though it is still early in the 2010 Season and athletes may still be doing strength training it was clear yesterday that the once indomitable national sprinter champion Rawle Greene may not be the ‘Knight in Shining Armour’ after all.
Greene struggled for focus in the Men 100m final with two false starts that put him out of the event yesterday as the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) held Development Meet Two at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Ground, Camp Ayanganna.
Greene returned in the 200m to place third behind GDF’s Rupert Perry and Patrick King, which, more or less, confirmed his struggles yesterday. The national sprint champion ran 22.4 seconds for third place in the Men’s 200m race.
Perry ran 21.9 seconds to win and King 22.2 seconds for second. Earlier, Perry had won a blistering 100m, in the absence of Greene, in 10.5 seconds with Keith Roberts (10.7) and Kerdell Mentore (11.0) second and third respectively.
Rising junior sprint aces, Cortez Fraser and Chavez Ageday were in sublime form with double wins in the 100m and 200m youth and junior races respectively. The duo clarified the issue of their status among the best in Guyana.
Fraser opened with a win in the 100m in 11.1 seconds with Curtis Barnes second in 11.2 seconds and Orin Sobers third in 11.3. Ageday won his race in 10.7 seconds ahead of Okeme Stewart (11.0) and Steve Nelson (11.0) as well.
Fraser returned to win his 200m race in 22.4 seconds while Davin Fraser and Carl Tudor both returned 22.8 for joint second. Ageday won the junior race in 22.1 seconds ahead of Shawn Semple (22.7) and Carlos Haynes (22.8) respectively.
Just as the male national schools’ champions represented, so did the females in Tiffany Carto, Iana Graham and Nisa Alleyne who entertained the modest crowd of supporters at the GDF venue in steaming sunshine yesterday.
Carto won the 100m female youth race in 12.9 seconds with Graham also sharing the same time and Ashley Tasher third in 13.1 seconds. Graham returned to win the 200m in 26.5 seconds with Letitia Myles (26.6) and Shaquan Daniels (26.9) in second and third respectively.
Olana Grant snatched the 100m junior event from Juanita Hooper (13.3) in a time of 13.0 seconds with Mattica McAllister in third with 13.7 seconds. Alleyne won the 200m in 25.3 seconds with Nadine Rodrigues second in 25.9 and Grant third in 35.9 seconds.
Earlier, Alisha Fortune had won the Women 100m in 11.7 seconds with Leota Babb second in 12.3 seconds and Rushell Coates third in 12.6 seconds. Guyana’s premier junior athletes will return to action this weekend as they try to make the qualifying standards for the Inter-Guiana Games in French Guiana.
