Odeen Brown registered his 8th five wicket haul in first class cricket, to restrict the Combined Campus and Colleges (CCC) to 161 all out and helped Jamaica claim first innings points when play resumed on day two in the 5th round of the 2010 Regional 4 day cricket tournament at the Providence Stadium last evening.
However, the CCC were fighting back and at stumps had the Jamaicans at 2-37 with two full days of cricket still to be played. Brown finished with remarkable figures of 27.4 overs, 9 maidens, 8 wickets for 54 runs. Tomar Lambert supported with 12-3-24- 3.
The glorious sunshine of the first day held as Jamaica resumed their innings on 194-4 with both overnight batsmen, Jason Dow and Andrew Richardson, still to score. Kavish Kantasingh wasted little time in cleaning up the tail when he removed Richardson after the Jamaicans had added 8 leaving the CCC with a modest total of 203 to take first innings points.
Brown quickly established his dominance when he sent back Omar Phillips caught and bowled for 13 off 72 balls. Kyle Corbin strode in and lashed an enterprising 34 but fell shortly after, deceived by a twirler from Brown. Jamal Smith was Brown’s next victim, caught wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh for 4. In the meantime Kjon Ottley was slowly building on a handsome total but fell to Brown shortly afterwards, 6 short of his half century.
Floyd Reifer, who captained the West Indies team in the Bangladesh tour of the Caribbean last year, had scarcely reached double figures (10) when he was sent back, trapped LBW to Tomar Lambert moments before the tea break with the score on 122-5.
On resumption, Brown continued his rampage, bowling from the media centre end. Lambert was the other bowler from the pavilion end. The two spun webs around Kevin McClean and Chadwick Walton but the two batsmen staunchly stood their ground pushing and prodding while striking the occasional boundary.
First it was McClean who opened his shoulders to send Brown crashing into the boundary and then Walton drove Lambert to long off to emulate his teammate. Lambert stuck to the task and got his revenge in the very next ball when he sent Walton’s stumps scuttling to leave the CCC on 134-6. Walton departed for 13 off 23 balls with a solitary boundary.
Ryan Austin joined McClean and scored off the first ball he faced off the bowling of Lambert. He did not last long as Brown returned and trapped him LBW for 4 at 143-7. At that point the CCC needed 59 to take first innings points.
The result was never really in doubt as Brown continued his rampage. Gavin Wallace made 2 and was then deceived by a well pitched up ball from Brown to leave CCC tottering on 145-8. Three balls later, Kantasingh prodded at a ball from McClean and was clean bowled after just 4 runs had been added to the total. Brown then rounded off his remarkable spell when he had Kishmar Katlin caught by Andrew Richardson for a duck and the CCC were all out at 161 off 73.4 overs.
The CCC boys were not prepared to surrender meekly and Kevin McClean bowled a fiery spell to have Brenton Parchment caught after he had scored 3 runs. Danza Hyatt lashed three audacious boundaries and was just taking the attack to CCC when he attempted to play across the line and offered an easy return catch to Kantasingh and the score was 20-2. His departure brought in night watchman, Andrew Richardson. He survived two confident LBW appeals off Singh and responded with a straight drive that crashed into the boundary. Kyle Corbin also had some anxious moments when the umpire ruled that he was caught at slip. The square leg umpire then consulted with the standing umpire resulting in the decision being reversed. Shortly after, stumps were drawn. A great day of cricket is envisaged when the two teams take to the field at around 13:00hrs today.
