– Minister Anthony lends assistance
President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, has made a prompt response to the challenging conditions young boxers endure at the Pocket Rocket boxing gym in New Amsterdam.
Just about a week ago, Ninvalle, who is also the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, along with GABA Vice president Jeff Roberts, who formed part of a team that have been visiting gyms around the country, on a visit to the Berbice facility.
These visits are in keeping with a promise made by this new GABA executive to assess the situation at all gyms around the country and regularise their operations and equipment.
They have visited several gyms abound the city and Berbice and are set to travel to Linden and Essequibo shortly.
In Berbice, Ninvalle and Roberts discovered that there were no washrooms, changing rooms and toilet facilities at the venue where the gym is housed. Disturbed by the conditions, the GABA boss immediately made a request for assistance from Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, who was quick to lend his support. He offered the use of a portion of the government Drop in Centre at Smithfield in New Amsterdam.
Ninvalle along with members of his executive and Earlan ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers are due to visit the Centre this week to access which area is to be used and what modifications are to be done.
Dr. Anthony recently committed his ministry to funding the employment of a national boxing coach. He has asked Ninvalle to identify that individual. The PS told this newspaper that they have already been looking into this matter and a person is to be named sometime this week and an official announcement made promptly.
Guyana has not had a national boxing coach for a number of years now.
When contacted, Rogers expressed delight at the offer being made to his gym. He noted that they are currently housed under the PNC building in New Amsterdam, which is currently without any toilet facilities. He noted that it would be very good for him and his team of young fighters to be relocated.
Rogers also informed that they have been promised boxing equipment by Ninvalle.
He would also be pleased that a ring could be arranged and set up at the new location at the Centre when they move. He expressed heart felt thanks to the GABA boss and the Minister for their assistance.
Since taking over the helm of GABA, Ninvalle has been quite busy looking into the operations of gyms around the city and Berbice and also the operations of his association.
He and team are seemingly headed in the right direction based on their efforts to aid the development of the sport locally and the support of government and corporate Guyana mainly, would propel their efforts.
